Laser Acne Scar Treatment: How does it work?
Most acne scars form due to irregular production of collagen during the healing process. Rather than replacing the affected cells with healthy ones, either too much (raised scars) or too little (pitted scars) collagen is produced. UltraClear laser resurfacing treatments improve the appearance of scars by stimulating collagen production and giving your skin another chance to produce smooth, regular skin.

What Is the Treatment Like?
When you arrive for treatment after consultation, our welcoming staff will help you wash your skin and then take photos so you can see your healing and progression at your follow-up visit. You will be seated in a comfortable chair and numbing cream will then be applied to the treatment areas. Depending on your individual needs, your treatment will take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes. Dr. Peck will use the laser system to deliver several effects. First, the top layer of the skin is treated to remove damaged, pigmented or older cells. The lower layers will also absorb energy, leading to collagen production and remodeling of the scar. This process is called collagen remodeling and can be thought of as giving your skin a fresh chance to rebuild itself properly in a more controlled environment.
Is There a Recovery Period?
For lighter treatments, patients can expect minor redness and swelling for a couple of days. However, most patients can still use makeup within hours and return to work the following day. Deeper scarring may require a more intensive laser mode, and you may want to take about a week off from work. Still, this is different from surgical downtime in that you can still engage in most activities but may want to let any swelling or redness fade before returning to your full routine.
Laser Acne Scar Treatment Results
Most patients have excellent results after only one treatment. However, results can vary and some individuals may need additional treatments. Once you have healed from the laser, you will see and feel an immediate improvement in the color and texture of your skin. You can expect continued noticeable improvements over the next 6 months after treatment because the body will continue to produce new collagen during this time.
