Laser Acne Scar Treatment: What Is It?
Most acne scars form due to the aberrant production of collagen during the healing process. Rather than replacing the affected cells with healthy ones, either too much (raised scars) or too little (pitted scars) collagen is produced. Laser treatments take this into account and work by giving your skin another chance.
Our laser system has multiple modes, allowing us to fill in pitted acne scars or reduce raised ones. While many laser systems can treat acne scars, our cold fiber laser combines increased efficacy with improved comfort, making it a top choice over CO2 laser treatments.

What Is the Treatment Like?
Traditionally, laser scar treatment would be uncomfortable and may even require numbing cream. Our method is typically reported to be much more comfortable, even for more sensitive skin. No numbing cream is required for almost all cases using our cold laser.
Dr. Peck will use the laser system to deliver thermal energy to the treatment areas, causing several effects. First, the top layer of the skin is ablated, removing damaged or older cells. The lower layers absorb this energy, leading to collagen production and turnover of the scar cells. This process is called collagen remodeling and can be thought of as giving your skin a fresh chance to rebuild itself properly in a more controlled environment. A full-face treatment is over within 20 minutes on average, giving the treatment its status as a lunchtime peel.

Is There a Recovery Period?
For lighter treatments, patients can expect minor redness and swelling for a couple of days. However, most patients can still use makeup within hours and return to work the following day. Deeper scarring may require a more intensive laser mode, and you may want to take about a week off from work. Still, this is different from surgical downtime in that you can still engage in most activities but may want to let any swelling or redness fade before returning to your full routine.
Laser Acne Scar Treatment Results
Depending on the depth, number, and type of scars, you may need between 3 and 6 treatments to see full results. You can expect noticeable improvements about 4–6 weeks after each treatment once your skin has had time to complete cell turnover.
Can I Treat Other Scars Too?
You can! Acne scars and other scars (from injuries or surgery) share similar characteristics. We can use the same laser system to reduce the appearance of mild to moderate scars on the face or other parts of the body.
