Will a Brow Lift Change My Eye Shape?

Working with the right brow lift surgeon can result in a transformative experience. But every detail of the procedure is of the utmost importance. That is, small changes have large effects. So when patients ask if a brow lift will change their eye shape, they are asking the right questions.

Will a Brow Lift Change My Eye Shape?

A brow lift works exclusively with the tissues above the eyes. So it will not directly change your actual eye shape. However, that does not mean it cannot influence how your eye area is perceived.

The procedure tightens the forehead area, which lifts a drooping or sagging brow. Without this lifting effect, the forehead can lend the eyes a disinterested or even displeased look. Lifting the brow creates a look that people instinctually perceive as more youthful.

So while eye and eyelid structure remain the same, a brow lift can influence how your eyes are perceived.

Side Note: Combining with Blepharoplasty

If you do want a more dramatic shift to your eye shape, eyelid surgery can give you those results. These procedures adjust the upper or lower eyelid to rejuvenate the eye’s appearance. I can readily combine a brow lift and blepharoplasty into the same surgery. Doing so means you only need one recovery period but get the benefits of multiple procedures.

Then What Does a Brow Lift Do?

Lifts the Brow

Most notably, a brow lift moves sagging eyebrows to a higher, more youthful position.I do this by removing excess skin and repositioning it to a higher point. Exacting precision is needed here. Lifting the brow too high can create an artificially stretched look.

Reduces Forehead Lines

By tightening the forehead, a brow lift smooths wrinkles and frown lines in the area. As with lifting, I aim for balanced results. You want to look youthful, not stretched.

Opens the Eyes

Removing the weight of drooping skin can make your eyes appear more awake and less tired. The procedure eliminates the “hooding” effect that a heavy brow can instill.

How Does a Brow Lift Affect Eye Appearance?

Even minor changes to the face can affect its overall appearance. Anyone who has ever had a pimple will agree that small things are still a big deal. A brow lift can affect eye appearance a few ways, including the following.

Alert Expression

We associate a higher brow with being alert, and we associate a lower brow with the opposite. For many people, aging means seeing their brow grow lower and heavier. People automatically perceive this as a tired or disinterested look, even if you feel nothing of the sort.

A brow lift returns an alert expression to the eyes by opening the space.

Enhanced Arc

I can tailor your lift to create a personalized arch to your eyebrows. The eyebrow arch also plays a role in the personality people read into your face. You can choose a more elegant or defined arch for your procedure.

Subtle Illusion of Shape Change

From the color of your clothing to the shade of makeup, so many things can subtly influence the perceived shape of your face. None of these actually change your face shape, but the effect remains.

A similar notion applies to brow lifts. A slight upturn at the corners can generate one effect. A more parallel brow creates another one. Your face shape never changes, but these subtle differences can affect how someone perceives it.

There is no single ideal solution. Rather, I work with patients individually to create a look that suits their preferences, facial structure, and other features.
