Most Common Reasons for Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery has many benefits for people who are dissatisfied with their sagging eyelids. It can help a wide variety of patients who wish to address both cosmetic and eyelid medical concerns. If you want to pursue eyelid surgery in Idaho Falls, Dr. Cutler Peck is the perfect person to see for a consultation. Keep reading to learn more about the most common reasons someone might pursue eyelid surgery.

Most Common Reasons for Eyelid Surgery

Vision Impairment

Eyelid surgery is typically performed to correct drooping eyelids, also called ptosis. In some cases, eyelids can sag so significantly that they impair vision. When your eyelid sags so much that it impedes your field of vision and your day-to-day functioning, you should have it corrected with eyelid surgery.

This problem can sometimes appear at birth, a condition known as congenital ptosis. Luckily, assuming they are in good overall health, children are also eligible for eyelid repair surgery. A special technique raises and tightens the eyelid muscles to improve their function.

Ectropion or Entropion

There are two similar conditions called ectropion and entropion in which you may struggle to close your eyes completely. This inability can cause severe dryness and other irritation. It typically involves the eyelashes and your upper and lower lids. Part of the biological purpose of your eyelashes is to keep particles like dust out of your eyes, both with the top and bottom lashes. However, sometimes, your eyelids turn in irregular directions and cause eye irritation.

  • Ectropion: Ectropion—lids turning too far out—can negatively impact eye health. For example, you may have eye discomfort, tear up more than usual, or be unusually sensitive to light. This occurs because your eyelashes are too far away from the area they are supposed to protect. As the ectropion moves them further from the eyeball, you are at a bigger risk of eye damage.
  • Entropion: In the case of entropion—lids turning too far in—you will face these same problems, with the additional factor of your eyelashes rubbing directly on your eye. Without treatment, you may develop sores and ulcers on the surface of your eye, which can lead to infection if left untreated!

Ectropion and entropion are both serious conditions best resolved with blepharoplasty, an eyelid surgery that removes extra skin from the eyelids.

Visible Aging

Of course, not every common reason for eyelid surgery has to be medical. Many people also pursue cosmetic eyelid surgery to reduce signs of aging around the eyes. For example, mild to moderate eyelid drooping can be resolved with one of our aesthetic treatments. If you want to achieve a younger, more energized look, you can seek cosmetic eyelid repair.

As you age, the skin on your eyelids will stretch, just like in other parts of the body. The muscles that raise your eyelids will also become weaker. This combination can lead to an older appearance due to a droopy appearance. Some may also notice bags under the eye.
